Introduction to 6 Different Types of Heating Systems

Oct 19, 2022

Fall is here, and the temperatures are dropping each day. You need a heating system to keep your rooms warm and comfortable. Many types of HVAC systems exist, and choosing the best one may be difficult. Learn about the various types of HVAC systems for your home.

1. Split System

Split HVAC systems are quite popular and present in many homes. The systems have a traditional thermostat that you can use to set the temperature for the entire home.

When you buy this system, you can install the heating unit in your basement or any ideal indoor space. You will also need gas power to run your split system HVAC.

The system is so-named because heating elements are separate from air conditioning elements.

2. Hybrid Split System

The hybrid split system resembles the split system discussed above. Hybrid systems have high energy efficiency because they can use more than one power source. Most hybrid systems allow homeowners to select between electric power and gas power. Choose the hybrid system if you stay in a place with fluctuating climatic conditions.

3. Ductless Systems

Ductless systems contain several units that you can put in many rooms to heat your home. You can mount the ductless system on the wall and then link it to an outdoor compressor. The main benefits of ductless systems are their seamlessness and straightforward installation procedures. You can also choose only to heat some rooms and not others, thereby reducing your energy bills.

4. Zoning System

Zoning HVAC system controls airflow in the ductwork by using dampers. Dampers enable homeowners to create temperature zones within the same space. Such an arrangement can reduce energy usage and increase the comfort of the home.

A zoning HVAC may be perfect for your home if the occupants have different temperature preferences. You will be able to set the correct temperature to meet each person's comfort requirements. The zoned system may also be perfect if your house has massive windows or upper floors that keep getting warmer than the lower floors. Stuffy or rarely used rooms can also benefit from a zoned HVAC system.

5. Hydronic System

The hydronic HVAC system uses water to distribute energy throughout your home. Water has many excellent heat conduction benefits, making the liquid the perfect choice for heat transfer. Moreover, water is abundant, cheap, and environmentally friendly.

The hydronic system comes with a heat source, like a boiler. Once the heat source warms the water, the liquid will be pumped to various sections of your home. The warm water will then transfer heat via the ventilation system before flowing back into the heat source.

The hydronic HVAC system consists of several parts. The most common components include pipes, fan coils, heating and cooling systems, and a heat pump.

6. Geothermal Heat Pump

Geothermal heat pumps first entered the market in the 1940s. The pumps use the earth's temperature to control the temperature inside a room. The heat exchange is possible because temperatures a few feet underneath the earth's surface will be constant regardless of the season. Generally, temperatures will remain at about 45 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

In autumn and winter, the geothermal heat pump will tap into these relatively higher underground temperatures and transfer them into your house. Most pumps have compressors and variable fans to make your home more comfortable and to lead to energy savings. Moreover, geothermal systems don't produce much noise and will serve you for a long time. Also, you will spend less time and money maintaining the geothermal heat pump.
